political career

He started his political career by joining Shiv Sena in 1995. Initially, he was a party worker and later became the spokesperson of the party’s youth wing. He left the party in 2014 when he was not given a ticket for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. From 2014 to 2019, he was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, nominated by the Governor. In 2014, after leaving Shiv Sena, he joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Maval constituency, but could not win. He lost to Shiv Sena’s Sriranga Appa Barne. In 2019, he left NCP and joined BJP as MLA from Colaba constituency. On 3 July 2022, he was elected as the Speaker of the House Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He won the election by 164 votes while Shiv Sena candidate Rajan Salvi got 107 votes. Rahul became the second youngest person to be elected as the speaker of any state in the country at the age of 44, while Shivraj Patil became the youngest speaker at the age of 42.
