According to ITV, Gabrielle Glaister is set to return to Coronation Street after a two-decade absence. This time, actresses Brookside and Blackadder will play the dual role of Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove). Corrie actress Jane Hazlegrove is said to have suggested that she should be cast in the supporting dual role as she is often mistaken for Glaister on the street. According to Metro, Hazlegrove introduced the plot to writer Jonathan Harvey, who later expanded on it. Fern, played by Gabrielle Glaister, will be recognized for her shady jokes and unusual fashion sense.

What role has Gabrielle Glaister previously played in Coronation Street?
Gabrielle Glaister previously appeared in Coronation Street from February 6 to November 10, 2000. She played Debs Brownlow, who left with Natalie Horrocks’ (Denise Welch) boyfriend Vinny Sorrell (Ian Kelsey) after breaking up with Duggie Ferguson (John Bowe). Debs Brownlow played Natalie Horrocks’ aesthetic sister in the episode. She was with her for nine months and worked in Audrey’s hair salon as a hairdresser. Gabrielle Glaister was delighted to be part of the team and working with Denise Welch, her sister Natalie, when she was cast as Debs at the time. She stated:
“I am a huge fan of Coronation Street and I am delighted to be working with Denise.” I just hope it doesn’t ruin my viewing experience because I’ll know what’s coming.”
This time, however, she won’t reprise the role of Debs, but instead plays a completely different character named Fern. While discussing a potential backstory that would be ideal for Jane and Gabrielle, the former said that their physical resemblance had her considering bringing Gabrielle Glaister back to the group. She said, according to Entertainment Daily:
“People often confuse Gabby and me, saying they see one of us in something when it’s something else… We often joke about that a lot, but I thought it would be fun to have her on the show as Bernie’s hidden twin or doppelgänger.”
Gabrielle also expressed her joy by mentioning that other performers in the profession sometimes mistake her for Jane. She mentioned:
“For years, Jane and I were confused for each other. Jane insisted on being at Brookside, while I insisted on being at Casualty! Or people clapping for me at a show I wasn’t there because Jane was so amazing.”
