Shawn Barber, three-time NCAA champion and Olympic pole vaulter, died at his home on January 18. He was 29 years old. While the cause of death still appears to be unknown, the Associated Press reports that the 29-year-old had been dealing with health complications.
Following his passing, Barber’s agent, Paul Statement, released a statement regarding his untimely passing.
“More than just an incredible athlete, Shawn was such a kind-hearted person who always put others before himself,” Doyle said Thursday. “It’s tragic to lose such a good person at such a young age.”
The hairdresser faces ‘personal problems’
He placed in the top 10 in the pole vault competition at the 2016 Olympics. But then Barber suffered a multitude of ankle problems in 2018. He was forced to sit out the entire 2019 season. Upon his return, The late pole vault star admitted he had been dealing with some “personal issues.” However, she said she was looking forward to having fun again.
“I was dealing with some personal issues: injuries, family. There were many personal factors that influenced my career that I had to re-evaluate and I am still in the process of managing those relationships,” she said in 2020.
“Overall I’m pretty healthy and it’s good to jump. It’s a lot of fun to have those first encounters. Something I really want to work on is being able to perform and have fun in a competition without feeling of pressure.”
George Barber was criticized in 2015
His father, George, spent much of his life training him. But that all came to a screeching halt in 2015. George was banned by athletics’ national governing body after his 2007 criminal conviction on charges of having sex with a student while working at a US high school was revealed. .
Although Sean said he understood the decision to ban his father, George still had his son’s full support. “Athletics Canada did what they felt they had to do. “I understand them and I don’t blame them for their actions,” he said in 2015.
“My training and competition plans will continue as scheduled and I hope they will result in successful performances. My father never held an official position with Athletics Canada, so it’s not a problem. My father has always supported me and I am sure that he will continue to be my biggest fan and he will support me in whatever he decides to do.”
