Raima Islam Shimu was a Bangladeshi actor, filmmaker and journalist. She was brutally murdered by her husband in January 2022 and her body was found in a sack on 17 January 2022 near Hazratpur Bridge Keraniganj, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

livelihood
She debuted as an actress in the Bangladeshi film ‘Bartman’ (1997) directed by Kazi Hayat. He acted in more than 25 Bangladeshi films including ‘Minister’ (2003). He worked with many popular Bangladeshi film directors such as Chashi Nazrul Islam, Delwar Jahan Jhantu, AJ Rana, Sharifuddin Khan and Inayat Karim. Some of the famous Bangladeshi actors who worked with him are Riaz, Amit Hasan, Bapparaj, Shakib Khan, Zahid Hasan and Mosharraf Karim. In 2004, she appeared in the Bangladeshi film ‘Jamai Swasur’ and after that she was not seen in films.

Raima worked as an actor in various Bangladeshi TV dramas. He also worked as a film producer in many Bangladeshi TV dramas under his production house. On 29 December 2020, he started working at TV news channel ATN Bangla as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. In the same year, he was appointed as the CEO of TN Events Limited, an event management company. In 2020, she started a salon named ‘Rose Beauty Salon’ in Bangladesh. Raima launched SR Production, a music production studio in Bangladesh, on 8 July 2021. The same year, she joined Arthokotha—Bangladesh’s national business magazine—as a journalist.
Controversy
Upon her death in January 2022, there were rumors that Raima had a dispute with Bangladeshi actor Zayed Khan over his membership in the Bangladesh Film Artists Association. Later, Khan denied the rumors and said,
I have never talked to Shimu on phone in the last two years. This is all a conspiracy against me.
Death
In January 2022, she went to Mawa, Bangladesh for a shooting project. When she did not return home, her brother tried to call her, but could not reach her. Later, her family members lodged a missing complaint at a local police station and a police team started searching for her in the nearby areas. On 17 January 2022, his body was found in pieces in a sack near Hazratpur Bridge in Keraniganj, Bangladesh. After investigation by the local police, his driver and four other people were detained in the murder case. He was arrested by the ‘Rapid Action Battalion’ (RAB), an elite anti-crime and counter-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police. Speaking to journalists during the initial investigation process, the local police said,
Due to injury marks found on Raima’s body, it is believed that criminals might have murdered her on Sunday, after which her body was thrown. His body was then taken away in a car. We confiscated the car. The body has been sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital (SSMCH) for post-mortem and investigation is underway.
Upon further interrogation by the local police, her husband Shakhawat Ali Nobel confessed that he had murdered his wife and that the reason behind the murder was marital discord. Later speaking to police officers, Raima’s brother said,
Nobel is a drug addict. He often argued with my sister. I have seen blood in Nobel’s car. He was not at home from 8 am to 10 am on Monday, I thought he might have left his body during this time.
Later speaking to reporters, Raima’s sister said,
I am in the police station right now; Preparations are underway to file a case. After the case, I will go to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital to collect the body of my sister. We have not yet been able to take any decision regarding whether my sister’s husband has been convicted of murder or not. But we are talking.”
