Before playing for the Australia Under 19 team, Pattinson played cricket for Dandenong Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier Cricket. He was also part of the Australian cricket team at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2008. The same year, at the age of 18, he made his debut in first-class cricket. In December 2009, while playing for the Victorian cricket team, Pattison set a new best bowling record in Australian List A cricket; He took six wickets for 48 runs in the 10 overs he bowled.
