Zarifa Wahid is an Indian film actress and producer known for her work in the Assamese film industry. She is best known for playing the role of Ranjana Bora in the film ‘Bandhon’ directed by Jahnu Barua, which was released in 2012 and won the Best Feature Film in Assamese award at the 60th National Film Awards. In 1990, Zarifa Wahid made her acting debut as a child artist in the Assamese film ‘Abhiman’. Later, she appeared in many more Assamese films like ‘Agnigarh’ (1994), ‘Atikram’ (1994), ‘Antheen Jatra’ (2004), and ‘Bhog Khiriki’ (2018). She is known for playing a variety of roles, for example in ‘Antheen Jatra’ she played the character of a village girl. According to Zerifa, she opened her own production house to enhance Assamese cinema and produce good quality work. Despite making significant contributions to Indian cinema, Zerifa feels that OTT platforms are not welcoming of her work and that of other Assamese or Northeastern actors and directors, and that she is not getting the spotlight she needs in the mainstream industry. In an interview he said,
In the international film festival circuit, Assamese films are now quite famous due to the works of Sanjay Hazarika, late Vidyut Chakraborty and Jahnu Barua, who bring the film awards to India every year. Director Rajat Kamal brings many awards. Jahnu Barua has received nineteen National Film Awards! But when it comes to the business aspect, we are not being welcomed by the OTT platforms. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar and Zee5 all have a huge catalog of many Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati and Punjabi movies. But not Assamese films. Since 2011 there have been around 30 to 40 new Assamese films which are good films that have performed well nationally and internationally. But the attitude of the people is not welcome. We, the Assamese and North-Eastern people, are shy and do not know how to go to the market or sell products. Lack of marketing skills. We don’t expose ourselves or put ourselves out there. Many filmmakers are happy with the selection of their films in some film festivals but are not interested in earning money back. So the problem lies with us individually.”
