Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz has expressed serious concerns about the impact of league realignment on student-athletes’ well-being. Drinkwitz expressed concern at the press conference about the significant travel and time costs that the recent additions of Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA to the Big Ten may place on student-athletes. He questioned whether the decision-makers took into account the expenses related to these student-athletes.
While a huge infusion of money from the redistricting agreement could address the financial element, the toll on the well-being and mental health of student-athletes cannot be paid for with money alone. While student-athletes have limitations, administrators and decision-makers appear to be more flexible in their decisions during league realignment.
This disparity raises questions about whether student-athletes’ interests and needs are adequately addressed throughout the process. Since the SEC has already realigned to include Texas and Oklahoma, Drinkwitz acknowledges that logistical issues similar to those in the Big Ten may be less prominent. He does, however, emphasize the need to put student-athlete welfare first in any choice to realign the league.
