Debra Ann Haaland is the current United States Secretary of the Interior. Haaland served as the US representative for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district from 2019 to 2021. Her district included most of Albuquerque, New Mexico’s most populous city, and its suburbs. Deb was one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress.
President Joe Biden announced in mid-December 2020 that he would nominate Haaland for secretary of the interior. Confirmation from him makes Deb the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet Secretary. She was sworn in on March 16, 2021.
This piece will look at the love life of Deb Halland. The identity of her husband is unclear.
Deb struggled while raising her daughter Somah Haaland as a single mother
Deb Haaland’s daughter, Somah Haaland, was born in 1994. The identity of her father is unclear.
Deb has opened up about the struggle of raising Somah as a single parent. She writes on her site that she volunteered at Somah’s preschool to pay for her early childhood education. Deb relied on food stamps and living paycheck to paycheck as she struggled to finish college. According to the site, Deb and Somah are still paying off their student loans.
Haaland gave insight into Somah’s personal life while celebrating the US Supreme Court’s decision to uphold marriage equality. She issued a statement saying:
“As the mother of a lesbian daughter, I am thrilled to know that her future is free of barriers to marry whomever she wishes. Somah spoke to me when she was a senior in high school and has advocated for the acceptance of this fundamental right ever since. I share this victory with her. Love wins!”
Deb has chosen to keep her love life a secret.
It seems Deb’s political career takes precedence over her love life.
She never addresses their relationship status and has yet to reveal the identity of Somah’s father. It remains to be seen if she will change her stance given her new position in the Joe Biden administration.
