“He just taught me a lot about how to be a great scene partner,” Metcalf said. “I was very afraid to improvise with him because, to begin with, it scares me, but then having to face the possibility of doing it with a teacher? No. So I stuck to the script very cautiously. And I think he realized that about me too. He was good at reading people and knowing what would make them feel comfortable.”
Meanwhile, the late Richard Lewis, who passed away recently, fondly remembered Candy.
“When I went out with him, I would say, ‘Listen, John, let me pretend I’m a writer in SCTVand let me think about [a scenario], and you do the voice and you do the improvisation.’ And he said, ‘Okay,'” Lewis said.
Lewis continued: “I was doing things like, ‘I need a root canal and my dentist is away. And lo and behold, Montgomery Clift is my dentist. And they are doing the root canal, but he is very sad because he is upset because Marilyn Monroe passed away.” I would say: ‘Action!’ And I’d play a depressed Monty Clift because Marilyn died, and he’s having a root canal,” Lewis says. “He was in comedy heaven.”
