Taylor Swift fans claim new album is a nod to Joe Alwyn’s ‘Tortured Man Club’

Following the news that Taylor Swift releases her new album The Department of Tortured Poets This spring, many are speculating what inspired the title of the long-awaited album.

A popular fan theory is that the title is a dig at Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. The couple dated for six years before calling it quits in early 2023.

The title may refer to Alwyn’s “Tortured Man Club” group chat on WhatsApp with Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. The trio discussed the group chat with Variety. “I think it’s the Tortured Man’s Club,” Alwyn explained. “It’s me, [Mescal] – and Andrew Scott started the group.”

“He just does it every day,” Mescal said of Scott. “He’s alone in this.”

Alwyn chimed in and said: “Just texting me good morning. We were both at the Sally Rooney and we crossed paths with Lenny Abrahamson. “We were very lucky to have that experience.”

The group chat was especially for the trio to also share their “issues” about their loved ones. However, they admitted that they were no longer so “tortured.” During that time, Mescal dated Phoebe Bridgers while Alwyn dated Taylor Swift.

Curiously, the actor’s exes have done numerous collaborations together. Bridgers also opened for multiple shows on the US leg of Swift’s The Eras Tour.

The song made its debut a month after Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn confirmed their split. Less than six months later, Swift began dating Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Travis Kelce. The duo’s relationship has continually made headlines due to their appearances in numerous NFL games.

There is currently speculation that, despite being on the other side of the world, Swift could still make it to Super Bowl LVIII to see Kelce play against the San Francisco 49ers. However, there has been no official information about Swift’s plans for this Sunday, February 11.
