Career
For starters, after moving to Los Angeles in 1980, he started playing piano for Sheena Easton’s band. He also signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to compose songs for other artists. In 1984, he co-founded Bruce Hornsby and the Range with David Mansfield (guitar, mandolin, violin), George Marinelli (guitar and backing vocals), Joe Puerto (bass guitar and backing vocals) and John Molo (drums). The band signed to RCA in 1985 and later released their debut album The Way It Is, which was a huge success. In 1986, the disc won its first Grammy Award. Scenes from the Southside, the band’s second album, was released in 1988.
In early 1988, he toured with the Grateful Dead as keyboardist, replacing Brent Mydland. Harbor Lights, his debut solo album, was released later that year. He continued to tour and play with another popular band, The Noisemakers, from 1998 to 2000.
He also collaborated with Skaggs & Hornsby with bluegrass guitarist Ricky Skaggs in 2007 and created the single Darlin’ Cory. They feature the Kentucky Thunder, and all three have made significant contributions to bluegrass, jazzy piano, and country music. Hornsby also wrote songs for the Broadway musical SKBSTD.
