Suraj Tiwari was born on Sunday, 17 November 1996 (age 27 years; as of 2022) in Dhanrajpur, Kurawali, Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. Their zodiac sign is Scorpio. He did his schooling from Maharshi Parshuram Public School, Kurawali, Uttar Pradesh. He also attended SBRL Vysya Residential Educational Public Academy, Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh and Swami Sampurnanand ICMAS, Mainpuri. He earned a bachelor’s degree in science, but had to leave his studies due to a train accident in 2017. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian language from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He also earned a Master of Arts degree. He was born in a middle class family which was not very strong financially. He and his elder brother Rahul used to work and earn Rs. 12,000 per month to help the family financially. After completing his schooling in Mainpuri, he moved to Delhi to pursue his graduation.

His mother’s name is Asha Devi. He has two brothers, Rahul Tiwari and Raghav Tiwari. Rahul died in a road accident on 25 May 2017. His sister’s name is Priya Tiwari.

On January 24, 2017, when he was going from Delhi to his home by train, he met with an accident in Ghaziabad. He slipped from the train and fell on the tracks. He was immediately admitted to AIIMS Trauma Center and was treated there for four months. The cost of treatment is approximately Rs. 14 lakhs and his father took a loan of Rs. Rs 8 lakh for his treatment. After treatment, doctors told him that both his legs below the knee, his right arm up to the elbow and two fingers on his left hand were lost. This incident had a great impact on him and he remained depressed for a long time. When he was undergoing treatment in the hospital, he felt that he was not good for anything and he had no hope left.
Jawaharlal Nehru University
While he was hospitalized for four months, he came in contact with Akshish Gupta, a Jawaharlal Nehru University alumnus who has cerebral palsy. Akshansh suggested Suraj to study and appear for the entrance examination of Jawaharlal Nehru University. He lent him his books to study. According to Suraj, after meeting Lakshti, he got some hope. Eventually he was recovering from the accident and depression, but another problem started in his life. His father fell ill and underwent surgery and on 25 May 2017, his elder brother Rahul died in a road accident. He could not concentrate on his studies due to which he failed in the entrance examination. Talking about this in an interview he said,
I had lost my arms and legs and brother, our financial condition had become very bad. At that time I had lost the will to live. I wanted to take my life. But I was not even capable of killing myself (I was not even capable of killing myself).”
He was very disappointed after failing in the examination but he did not give up his dream. He again prepared for the entrance exam when the news came that JNU has decided to conduct the entrance exam twice a year in May and December. He studied continuously for more than three months and appeared for the December 2021 examination. Talking about this in an interview he said,
When I knew I had another shot, I gave it my all. For three months, I only studied and took the December exams. When I finally succeeded, I was on top of the world. There is no life without education for people like me.”
He got admission in JNU in 2021 and got Rs. They receive Rs 2,500 every month as Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarship and Rs. Rs 2,500 every month as escort allowance. Sometimes he was not able to pay his hostel fees but many people from his college helped him a lot. Talking about this in an interview he said,
Whether it’s giving me money when I don’t have it, or helping me in other ways, the students and teachers here have hearts of gold. I am currently preparing for IAS. This university is heaven on earth for me. It has given me everything. Whatever I become from here, the credit goes to JNU.
Union Public Service Commission
In 2023, when the UPSC results were declared, Suraj secured 917th rank in the UPSC exam to be held in 2022. He passed the exam in the first attempt. According to him, he used to study continuously for 18 hours to prepare for the exam. After the results were declared, Suraj’s family was very happy as all his relatives and neighbors congratulated him. In an interview, his father said that he could not believe that his son had passed the exam.
