Zoya Akhtar was born on 14 October 1972 (age 49 years; as in 2021) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He did his schooling at Manekji Cooper, Juhu, Mumbai and joined St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai to study Bachelor of Arts. After that, she joined Tisch School of the Arts, New York to learn filmmaking. When Zoya was 13 years old, her father divorced her mother and married Shabana Azmi.

His great grandfather Muztar Khairabadi was an Urdu poet. His grandfather John Nisar Akhtar was also an Urdu poet. She is the great-granddaughter of Fazal-e-Haq-Khairabadi, the scholar of Islamic studies and theology who notably edited Mirza Ghalib’s first Diwan at his request, and later became an important figure during the Indian Independence Revolution of 1857. Zoya started her career as the co-director of the music video “Price of Bullets”. The music video was for a rock band called Pentagram. Subsequently, he worked as a casting director for the films “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Split Wide Open”. He assisted his brother Farhan Akhtar in directing the films “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Lakshya”.
In 2009, he made his directorial debut with “Luck by Chance”. He not only directed the film but also worked as screenwriter and story writer.
