Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was born on Friday, 11 April 1958 (age 65 years; as of 2023) in Godabanahal village in Chitradurga district, Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Aries. He completed his primary education in his village and completed his graduation from Mysore University. He was ordained as the priest of Sri Jagadguru Murughrajendra Bruhanmutt and successor of Sri Mallikarjuna Murughrajendra Swamiji on 31 January 1991.

Arrested on charges of sexual exploitation
In September 2022, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was arrested due to sexual assault allegations leveled against him, he was accused of rape and sexual assault. The FIR was filed by minor girls aged 15 and 16, who were staying in a monastery run hostel and the girls had accused Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru of ‘sexually exploiting’ them for a few years. A case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, and the saint was arrested from Bankhapura town in Karnataka. The accused was granted bail on 8 November 2023 and released from jail on 16 November 2023. However, on 20 November 2023, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was arrested again and sent to judicial custody till 2 December 2023 in another POCSO case. Non-bailable warrant issued for non-appearance in court and “non-appearance in court hearing”. Later, the saint moved the Karnataka High Court and an order was passed demanding his immediate release from jail. The high court asked the special court to stay framing of charges against him under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Religious Institutions (Prevention of Abuse) Act and section 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. . , In October 2022, a woman filed an FIR against Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru for allegedly sexually assaulting her minor daughter.
