In 2006, he was appointed as the Assistant Magistrate and Collector in Aligarh. In 2007, he was appointed as Joint Magistrate and Collector in Saharanpur. He held the position of Chief Development Officer of Prayagraj from 2008 to 2009. He served as District Magistrate and Collector in Kaushambi (2009–2011), Amroha (2011), Ghazipur (2011–2012), and Etah (2012–2013). From 2012 to 2013, he received in-service training titled ‘Public Policy and Management’ at IILM Institute for Integrated Learning in Management in Delhi. He took another in-service training, ‘Natural Resource Management’, at the Administrative Training Institute in Mysore from 2013 to 2014. In 2013, he was appointed as Special Secretary, Department of Horticulture and Food Processing, and Department of Housing and Urban Planning, in Lucknow. He received Mid-Career Training, MCT Phase-III in 2015. He served as District Magistrate and Collector in Kushinagar (2014-2016) and Mainpuri (2016). He held the post of Inter Cadre Deputation to Karnataka for five years on personal basis. In 2021, he was appointed as the Divisional Commissioner of Saharanpur (2021-2023) and Kanpur Nagar (2023). During his 22-month tenure as the Divisional Commissioner of Saharanpur, Lokesh M completed important projects including the construction and beautification of two ponds on the Delhi Road. He was also instrumental in setting up various attractions like Herbal Park and Butterfly Park in the Company Garden.

In June 2023, apart from serving as the Divisional Commissioner, he also started serving as the Labor Commissioner in Kanpur Nagar. In July 2023, he replaced Ritu Maheshwari, a 2003 batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, as the CEO of the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA).
