Shazia Ilmi was born on Thursday, 2 April 1970 (age 51 years; as in 2021) in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. She did her schooling from St. Mary’s School, Kanpur and went to St. Bede’s College, Shimla to pursue her graduation. After this he studied Mass Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia University, Aligarh. After this, she went to the University of Wales, Cardiff to pursue courses in journalism and broadcasting. Ilmi also holds a Diploma in 16 mm Film Production from the New York Film Academy.

Shazia belongs to a Muslim family. His father, Maulana Ishaq Ilmi, was the founder of the Kanpur-based Urdu newspaper, ‘Siyasat Jadid’. His mother’s name is Naushaba Ilmi. He has 4 brothers and 1 sister. Shazia is the youngest among them all. His sister Reshma Ilmi is married to Arif Mohammad Khan, a former cabinet minister in the Union of India. His brother Dr. Aijaz Ilmi is the spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party. His brother, Rashid Ilmi, is also a politician. He also has an elder brother named Irshad Ilmi. Shazia is married to Sajid Malik, an investment banker and entrepreneur based in New Delhi. Her husband is half Gujarati Muslim and half Tamil Iyer. The couple has a daughter.

Shazia started her career as a news journalist and anchor. He has spent 15 years working for television news and documentary productions. Ilmi hosted and produced the prime time news show Desh Videsh on Star News. She has also produced and hosted several shows on current affairs and documentaries highlighting gender bias and the rights of minority groups in India. She has been a member of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT). In 2011, he produced a film titled “PO 418 Siasat Kanpur”, which showed the story of an Urdu newspaper’s struggle for survival. The film was screened at the IAWRT Film Festival and similar festivals in Kerala.
In 2011, she became the spokesperson for the India Against Corruption movement, led by Anna Hazare. After this she joined the Aam Aadmi Party. She contested the Ghaziabad constituency for AAP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, but lost to VK Singh.

Shazia resigned from AAP on 24 May 2014 and subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 16 January 2015. In 2017, he was appointed as the Additional Director of Engineers India Limited (EIL).

- In 2013, her mother Naushaba Ilmi sought police protection after Shazia allegedly abused her and became aggressive during a family property dispute. His mother told journalists, “I am ready to go to jail to escape his torture.” But I will continue to fight for the justice that he and his elder brother Irshad (Ilmi) are denying to my other children.
- In April 2014, a video went viral on social media in which Shazia made some controversial comments on Muslims being secular. He said- “Don’t be too secular.” Muslims are very secular and should go communal. They are not communal and do not vote for themselves. Arvind Kejriwal is ours. Muslims have been secular for a long time…they voted for Congress and helped them win. Don’t be so secular and look at your home this time.” However, his party distanced itself from his comments, saying it does not support such views.
- Ilmi was also accused of accepting money for AAP through some illegal means. A sting operation was conducted on Aam Aadmi Party members in which Shazia along with some other AAP leaders were shown accepting money in return for favours. However, the authenticity of the video was not proven.
