Jay Leno receives guardianship from his wife amid his battle with dementia

Former late-night talk show host Jay Leno has reportedly been granted guardianship of his wife of more than four decades, Mavis Leno, following her dementia diagnosis.

PEOPLE reports that during a hearing in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, April 9, Mavis’ attorney stated that he “agreed” with the conservatorship. She also noted that she is “receiving excellent care” with her husband by her side.

“I believe she is in the least restrictive environment,” the judge said. “I think she is very well taken care of with Mr. Leno.”

While addressing Jay Leno, the judge praised him. “Everything he is doing is right,” the judge said. “I totally understand that this is a difficult period.”

Also during the hearing, Jay told the judge that he was in the estate planning process and was analyzing Marvis’ will. He said all assets are common property and will not be a problem under the conservatorship.

Jay Leno filed for conservatorship of his wife earlier this year. At that time, Mavis was diagnosed with “advanced dementia.” Through his guardianship, he plans to establish a living trust for his wife. This is to ensure that she has “assets under management” to provide him with future care if he were to die.

Marvis’ attorney, Ronald Ostrin, filed a brief stating that she did not object but consented to the guardianship. Ostrin formally recommended that Jay be approved as a conservator. Marvis neurologist Dr. Hart Cohen supported the petition.

“[Jay] He is such a nice man and tries [Mavis] like gold,” said the neurologist.

Mavis and Jay Leno have been married since 1980. They have no children.

Jay Leno recently said Mavis is doing well amid battle with dementia

Right after filing the conservatorship, Jay Leno spoke with daily mail about his wife’s condition.

“She’s fine,” he told the outlet about Mavis. “Everyone is fine, we are doing well.”

He also gave the media outlet a thumbs up from the front seat of one of his vintage cars.

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Mavis’ condition made her “unable to execute the estate plan.” The documents formally addressed that Mavis suffers from dementia, considering the condition to be a “major neurocognitive disorder.”

“Jay is fully capable of continuing to support Marvis’ physical and financial needs as he has done throughout their marriage,” the document reads.

The performance comes nearly a year after Jay broke several bones during a motorcycle accident. He suffered severe burns in a car fire months before the accident.
