Safoora Zargar is an MPhil student from Jamia Millia Islamia, hailing from Kishtwar district of Jammu region of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. She is known for her role in student activism and the Citizenship Amendment Act protests.

Safoora Zargar was born in 1993 (age 30 years; as of 2023) in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. She grew up in Delhi and NCR. Safoora did most of her schooling in Faridabad. After completing her BA from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University, Safoora went to Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi), where she did her MA in Sociology. In 2019, he enrolled in MPhil in Sociology at Jamia Millia Islamia.

Anti CAA protest
While pursuing her MPhil at Jamia Millia Islamia, Safoora became a member of the media wing of the Jamia Coordination Committee, a wing that has reportedly been described as one of the main agencies that spearheaded the anti-CAA protests in the country. Safoora campaigned extensively against the Citizenship Amendment Act across Delhi and NCR. He led several anti-CAA protests in the area. During one such protest on 10 February 2020, she fell unconscious during a clash between police and students.
Controversy
On 10 April 2020, Delhi Police arrested Safoora Zargar from her residence in Delhi in connection with FIR 48/2020 registered in the Jaffrabad road-block case. Delhi Police accused him of being the main “conspirator” in the violence that broke out at Jaffrabad metro station in northeast Delhi on 22–23 February 2020. At least 53 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in the violence.
After being brought before a metropolitan magistrate on 11 April 2020, Safoora was sent to police custody for two days. Although he was granted bail on 13 April 2020, he was immediately re-arrested in a separate case in connection with FIR 59/2020 on the same day and some more charges were framed against him by Delhi Police on 20 April 2020 .
Safoora Zargar was also charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Reportedly, Zargar has been charged with 18 crimes, including rioting, possession of weapons, attempt to murder, inciting violence, treason, murder and promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion. Safoora is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail since 15 April 2020. Reportedly, she and her unborn baby were kept in solitary confinement in the prison for almost two weeks to protect them from COVID-19. On 4 June 2020, Delhi’s Patiala House Court denied bail to Safoora Zargar for her alleged role in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. Judge Dharmendra Rana, while rejecting his bail plea, said,
When you choose to play with embers, you can’t blame the wind for carrying the sparks too far and spreading the fire. The acts and inflammatory speeches of the co-conspirators are also admissible under Section 10 of the Indian Code against the applicant/accused.
On 24 June 2020, he was released on bail from Delhi High Court. Safoora had sought bail citing her pregnancy and serious medical problems. A Delhi trial court on 4 February 2023 discharged 11 accused in the 2019 Jamia violence case, including Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha and six others. Following the trial court’s decision, Delhi Police challenged it in the High Court and on 28 March 2023, the Delhi High Court quashed the release of Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha and six others. The prosecution claimed that the accused participated in the crowd, raised slogans of “Down with Delhi Police” and knowingly took part in an unlawful assembly. This view was supported by Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma, who ruled against the accused.
Reportedly, Safoora was three months pregnant at the time of her arrest. As soon as reports of her pregnancy came out, social media was flooded with trolls criticizing her pre-marriage pregnancy. Many people started assassinating his character by sharing unrelated pictures and videos on social media. In one such video of couple sex, people claimed that Safoora was in the video; However, it was later revealed that it was not Safoora but Pornhub model Selena Banks in the video.
