She quit professional gymnastics at the age of 18 to pursue acting.
Greta was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) on March 14, 1991 to Nigerian-Russian parents. She moved with her parents to Toronto, Canada, when she was 5 years old. Greta considers English her second language and, despite having lived in Toronto for most of her life, she is fluent in Russian. She has family in Russia and Saint Petersburg is one of her favorite places.
After moving to Canada, Greta took up gymnastics. She started out as an artistic gymnast before transitioning to rhythmic gymnastics at the age of 12. At one point, she worked with the renowned Canadian gymnast Alexandra Orlando. Greta declared in an interview in CBC:
“Something people may not know about me is that I am fluent in Russian! Also, I used to be a rhythmic gymnast and even worked out with Olympian Alexandra Orlando for a couple of months.”
Despite being a talented gymnast, Greta’s passion was acting. She gave up gymnastics at the age of 18 and took up acting. Fortunately, she had the support of her parents in her new adventure. She continued:
“Acting is something I’ve been doing since I was very young, and I was lucky to have very supportive parents who helped nurture and develop my passion. It’s something I’ve always loved doing, and I can’t be sure why, it just resonates with me. I love everything from putting myself in someone else’s shoes and telling a story to working with an amazing cast and crew.”

Greta fans on Instagram must have noticed the photos she uploaded of her wearing PPE during filming. She explained in a Q&A in mid-December 2020 that the cast only wore protection when the cameras weren’t rolling. She also described filming during the pandemic as difficult, but expressed her gratitude that the cast and crew managed to finish filming. Greta said:
“Sometimes it is difficult. I think the hardest part is just not being able to interact in the same way. Obviously, we’re not hugging. The day-to-day interaction with the crew is very different, but we all get by as best we can. I’m so grateful to be able to do another season for you guys and we hope you love it.”
Onieogou also described his first film experience in fever tone. She played one of Ben Wrightman’s (played by Jimmy Fallon) students. A huge fan of Drew Barrymore, Greta fondly remembers her experience on set. She explained:
“It was so much fun. I was on set in Toronto. It was the most fun. It was so much fun to be in this great production with a bunch of other kids. It was really special. I have really fun memories of that shot. [Jimmy and Drew] They were so sweet.”
Greta got a nine to five job during the audition because she wanted to have a plan B in case the performance didn’t work out.
Greta knew that she wanted to become an actress, but she knew that initially it would be difficult to get roles. So she got a nine to five job and she looked for acting opportunities whenever she had the time. She didn’t want to put all her eggs in one basket like most aspiring actors do. She doesn’t think it’s a bad idea, but she wanted to have a plan B in case acting didn’t work out. Greta stated in a question and answer session posted on her YouTube channel in October 2019:
“I felt like if I wasn’t in such a rush, then I wasn’t doing it right. That’s rubbish. Do it how you have to do it. If you have to work nine to five and then audition during lunch and after hours like I did, then do it. You don’t need to move here with no money and live out of your car to do it ‘the right way.’”
Greta’s acting auditions are rarely without drama, but she manages to land the parts.
Most of Greta’s acting auditions have been filled with drama. Before landing the role of Layla in all american, initially auditioned for the role of Olivia Baker. The casting directors loved her auditioning on video of her and called her to Los Angeles to try her out for the role of her. She spent the next week in Los Angeles auditioning for the role of Olivia. In the middle of the auditions, the directors told her to audition for Layla. She told her story in her Q&A video:
“In my final audition, I actually read for both roles and ended up hiring Layla. I was at the Santa Monica Pier with my dad, I got a call from my agent and manager, which is usually either a very good call or a very bad call. In my case it was a very good phone call… I was laughing and crying and my dad was there and the sun was going down, we were by the sea. It was a pretty perfect image.”
Greta came for her heartlands audition an hour late. He missed the audition, but his agents pulled some strings and he managed to make the audition. Greta declared in the CBC interview:
“I completely messed up the audition time and was an hour too late, with everything closed and everyone missing. Fortunately, my wonderful agent was able to get me another one, and the rest is history!”
Greta’s auditions are rarely without drama, but she’s not complaining.
