murder of barbara white
On March 31, 2020, Ryan Grantham shot his mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head while she was playing the piano in their home in Squamish. Apparently, his mother was battling cancer at that time. Shortly thereafter Grantham recorded a video in which he confessed to the murder. After this, he drove away as he intended to assassinate Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He packed a car with three guns, ammunition and 12 Molotov cocktails he had made and drove to Trudeau’s Rideau Cottage residence in the town of Hope, about 200 kilometers east. At some point, he changed his mind and decided that he would probably carry out a mass shooting at Simon Fraser University, where he was a student. However, he did not carry out any of the plans and instead turned himself in to police in Vancouver on April 1, 2020, where he confessed to killing his mother. Grantham was immediately taken into custody. Initially, he was charged with first-degree murder, but later, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges.
Trial and conviction
During the trial, Ryan’s attorney, Chris Johnson, claimed that Grantham was suffering from multiple mental health challenges, including anxiety, clinical depression, and suicidal thoughts. Johnson also revealed that Grantham argued that it was necessary to kill his mother in order to deal with the consequences of the crimes he planned to commit. On September 23, 2022, Ryan was convicted of his mother’s murder in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. During sentencing proceedings he was declared eligible for parole after 14 years. The court also imposed a lifetime firearms ban on Grantham.
