The Pentagon has been disposing of a conspiracy theory that claims pop queen Taylor Swift is part of a government “psychological operation.” The outlandish idea gained widespread popularity when it was introduced to Fox News primetime viewers on Tuesday, courtesy of host Jesse Watters. The presenter commented that a few years ago the “Pentagon’s psychological operations unit proposed to NATO to turn Taylor Swift into an asset to combat online disinformation.”
Watters shared a video from a 2019 conference hosted by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence. In the video, a host cites Swift as a prime example of a powerful influencer. It seems like a lot of “blank space” to fill in for this Taylor Swift conspiracy theory to work. However, Watters confessed that he could not support his claim that Swift was an undercover agent for a hidden political agenda.
In response, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh responded with a reference to another of Swift’s songs. “But that highlights that we still need Congress to approve our supplemental budget request as quickly as possible so we can be out of the forest with possible fiscal concerns,” he said in a statement to political.
