Robert Clary, the youngest of 14 children, was born on March 1, 1926. He started singing on a French radio station at the age of 12, and later studied painting in Paris. Clary was transferred to the Nazi concentration camp Ottmuth in Upper Silesia in 1942 because he was Jewish. The identification number A5714 was tattooed on his left arm and shipped to Buchenwald. Every Sunday, he and the organ player performed for a group of SS soldiers.

“We weren’t even human at the time. When we arrived in Buchenwald, SS soldiers pushed us into an overnight shower cabin. I’ve heard rumors about fake showers with gas nozzles. ‘That’s it,’ I thought. But it’s just a place to sleep.”
Clary said the Germans made them fast for eight days and made them lie on top of each other. He described the entire encounter as a nightmare, saying:
“We are nothing more than beasts. Sometimes I fantasize about those days. I woke up in a sweat, afraid I’d be sent to a concentration camp, but I’m not angry that it would be a waste of time.”
In April 1945, he was liberated from Buchenwald. His family was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp, and he was the only survivor.
