Neither Reba McEntire nor the viewers of The voice They were prepared for contestant Dylan Carter’s emotional performance.
Blind auditions for The voice They often exaggerate themselves emotionally. However, this it was not the case on the final night of season 24 auditions. Dylan Carter’s performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You” had the judges wrapped around their fingers, especially after he explained why he chose the heartfelt ballad.
After the four-chair audition, Carter, 20, told John Legend, “When I saw them turn around, I saw my mom. She passed away in October and she wanted me to sing it at her funeral.”
Carter explained how she tried to sing her rendition of “I Look to You” at her mother’s funeral, but couldn’t finish the song without crying. “This was the best second chance. I made her very proud,” she told the judges.
McEntire then tearfully explained how her mother played a big role in her own music career. The country singer expressed to Carter how she dedicated herself to music so that her mother could live her dreams through her daughter.
“Moms are so special,” Reba continued, “We’re so blessed to have them, right?”
When it came time for Carter to choose his team, obviously chose Team Reba and noted that he thought “she could be a comforting mother figure,” as reported by Entertainment Weekly. How sweet!
The voice Season 24 Contestants to Watch Out For
Earlier this month, contestant Laura Williams wowed the judges with a four-chair performance of “Fingers Crossed” by Lauren Spencer Smith. After Williams’ performance, she joined Team Niall, admitting that she was a long-time One Direction fan.
More recently, Latin singer Willie Gómez attracted the four judges with a flirtatious rendition of “La Bachata.” While Gwen Stefani was the first judge to turn her chair, Horan, Legend and McEntire quickly followed suit.
Despite the judge’s praise along with Stefani’s lighthearted flirting, Gomez ultimately chose Team Legend.
