Mala Adiga began her law career in October 2002 as a litigation associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago. Subsequently, she worked as a clerk for Judge Philip Simon in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana from September 2005 to August 2007.

Before beginning her career as a government employee, Garland worked as an assistant staff attorney for the Obama-Biden 2008 presidential campaign. Garland served in various administrative positions during the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017. She was counsel to the Associate Attorney General of the United States from July 2009 to December 2011. She was the Director for Human Rights in the National Security Staff (NSS). ) Multilateral and Human Rights Directorate from December 2011 to June 2013. In July 2013, she was appointed Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of State for Global Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State. She held this position until January 2016 and was then promoted to a more important position as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Educational Programs in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State. While in this position, he oversaw a wide range of international educational programs such as the Gilman Scholarship Program and the Fulbright Program.
He was removed from the US State Department in January 2017 after Barack Obama’s second presidential term ended. He served as a senior advisor to Jill Biden on the 2020 US election campaign and as a senior policy advisor to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Following the election of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States, Garland was reelected to the U.S. Department of State as a member of Joe Biden’s presidential transition team. She was given an important position in the Joe Biden administration as the Policy Director to the First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, Joe Biden’s wife.
