Before India’s partition, his family moved to Mumbai from their Kapoor Haveli in Peshawar (now in Pakistan) to pursue performing professions. Randhir is a High school graduate and pursued his schooling at Colonel Brown Cambridge School, Dehradun. Randhir started his acting career in the 1970s.

On 6 November 1971, Randhir got married to his longtime partner actress Babita Kapoor in a majestic ceremony. They have two daughters, Kareena Kapoor, and Karisma Kapoor, both are actors. In the 1980s, Randhir and his wife, Babita, began to experience some hurdles in their married life, which eventually caused them to live apart for a while. However, the couple reunited in 2007.

Randhir first appeared in the film ‘Shree 420’ (1955) and ‘Do Ustad’ (1959) as a child artist. Randhir Kapoor made his acting and directorial debut with the film ‘Kal Aaj Aur Kal'(1971), which starred his wife, father, and grandfather. The film performed moderately at the box office.

Randhir Kapoor started producing the film ‘Henna’ (1991) with his father Raj Kapoor in 1988; Randhir took over the film as a director after his father died. In 1996, he produced ‘Prem Granth,’ starring Madhuri Dixit and Rishi Kapoor, and in 1999, he produced ‘Aa Ab Laut Chale,’ starring Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Khanna.
