Rajeev Khandelwal is a resident of New Delhi. He did his schooling from Delhi Public School, New Delhi and did his Bachelor of Commerce from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. Subsequently, he did a Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management (1985–1987) from the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) in Gujarat. In May 2005, Rajeev Khandelwal and Krishnavatar Sharma co-founded Livelihood Bureau, a non-profit, charitable trust registered in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

In 2004, Rajiv Khandelwal was shocked when he saw 15-20 migrant workers in Rajkot, Gujarat, living in small overcrowded rooms, some of them suffering from tuberculosis and with no access to medical care, food or other essentials. - On 2 October 2020, Rajiv Khandelwal, along with Livelihood Bureau co-founder Krishnavtar Sharma, appeared on the show Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Bollywood celebrity Amitabh Bachchan. It is an Indian television game show in which contestants face a series of multiple-choice questions to win a large cash prize. Kaun Banega Crorepati invited Rajeev Khandelwal and Krishnavatar Sharma in its Karmaveer special episode, which involves an organization or an individual who has continuously worked for the betterment of the society or humanity in some way or the other.
