Praveen Jadhav is an Indian archer in the recurve discipline. He is regarded as an athlete who went through a lot of struggle and poverty to reach the level where he is now representing his country in international competitions. He is also serving as Havildar in the Indian Army.

Wiki/Biography

Praveen Jadhav was born on Saturday, 6 July 1996 (age 25 years; as in 2021) in village Sarade in Satara district in Maharashtra. His zodiac sign is Cancer. He studied in Zilla Parishad School (Satara district). He had a keen interest in sports since childhood. Then his sports teacher Baban Bhujpal (later his coach) advised him to go for track sports as it required zero investment considering his financial condition.

Then Bhujpal took care of all their dietary needs. He soon gained proficiency in the 400 m and 800 m running categories. He was planning to leave school after seventh grade as his family could not support further studies, but soon he joined Krida Prabodhini on the insistence of one of his school teachers. Krida Prabodhini is a program run by the government to support young talents in sports coming from rural areas. It provides them free coaching, education and accommodation. He soon received training at Balewadi, Pune. But due to his good performance, a physical test was conducted there which revealed that Jadhav is more suitable for archery. His father, Ramesh Jadhav Shetty was a laborer in Mahamandal (State Agriculture Corporation).But soon started a cattle farm when his son joined the Indian Army in 2017.

His mother Sangeeta Jadhav is a housewife. He has an elder sister (married). They live in a two-room concrete tin house provided by the State Agricultural Corporation in Sarde village.

Jadhav’s body had become weak due to malnutrition, as a result of which he often faced difficulty in lifting the recurve bow. He suffered extreme pain while shooting the bow, due to which Krida Prabodhini released him from the program. Bhujpal tried to bring him back to the program but failed. After this Bhujpal sought help from sports lover Mr. Palkar. Mr Palkar agreed, and then both of them traveled 800 km by car overnight to reach Amravati where the institute was located. After arriving, Mr Palkar approached sports officials to give Jadhav a chance to prove his worth. They agreed and were given a total of five chances. Jadhav was successful in all those attempts with a score of 45. His average per shot was nine out of ten, which impressed the executives to such an extent that they agreed to take him back into the program.

This proved to be a turning point in his career and after that he never looked back. He received a call from an Indian side to represent the country. In 2016, he participated in the Asia Cup Stage 1 held in Bangkok, Thailand. About 300 archers participated in this event. It was a qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics. She won the bronze medal in the recurve event with a score of 326. He also became a part of the Indian B team along with Tarundeep Rai and Binod Swansey at the 2016 Archery World Cup in Medellin (Colombia). The team could not do anything special and secured 9th rank in the event.

As his time with Krida Prabodhini was about to end, he had to arrange money to buy an archery kit, which cost around Rs 2.5 lakh. Since he received Rs 9000 per month as stipend, it was not enough to bear this expense. But since he is an international archer the Government of India rewarded him with Rs 2.5 lakh in cash. Soon his financial situation became stable.

In 2017 he joined the Indian Army under sports quota. Along with this, he also asked his father to leave his labor job. Instead, he bought her a dairy cattle farm so that her father could sell the milk. In the same year, he also won the gold medal at the National Championships in Cuttack, Odisha. He then competed in various international tournaments including the 11th World University Archery Championships 2016, Taipei Summer Universiade 2017, Hyundai Archery World Cup 2019 Stage 3 (Turkey), Hyundai Archery World Cup 2019 Stage 4 (Berlin), Tokyo 2020 Test Event and Guatemala . Then came the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where 33 different sports were included. The archery competition took place on 23–31 July 2021 at Yumenoshima Park. Jadhav was the best Indian among all Indian archers with 31st rank. Although Bazarzhapov made a good start in the target with 10 points in the first two shots, he ultimately missed the next three shots with 7-8-7. Jadhav was set to face 9-10 in his next game, which will be against world champion Brady Ellison.

However Alison was ordinary in her second and third sets and missed 8 twice. But Jadhav could not take advantage of that with two 7s and two 8s in his four sets. Thus he ended up with a defeat along with his colleague Tarundeep Rai, who was also eliminated in an individual event.

  • He revealed about his success story

“I didn’t get any money but I was like a helper. Sometimes I would carry fertilizer to sprinkle in the fields so that my father could complete his work as quickly as possible. Working in harsh conditions in the fields around Phaltan town in Maharashtra’s Satara district, where temperatures exceed 40 degrees in summer, made me tough.

“Working with my father as a child was a blessing. There is some external force on this planet that helps when we are struggling.”

  • When he is out of the country for competitions, he often calls his parents, which helps him stay focused and stress-free. But once, just a week before an important tournament, he found himself unable to contact his parents. He became worried and this condition continued for more than a week. During an interview he said

    “I was very worried why there was no response. I was thinking, I was feeling lonely. But then I realized that I should focus on my work first and stay focused. I tricked my mind that everything was good at home, and then I was able to concentrate.”

    Soon after the tournament ends, he learns that due to heavy rains the power supply in his village has been disrupted and his father’s phone has also been damaged. Later he came to know from his friend that everything was fine there.
