Lizzo Honored With Humanitarian Award During BMAC Gala, Says She’ll ‘Still Who I Am’ Amid Lawsuits

Lizzo shows off her sparkly award while surrounded by her Big Grrls crew during the BMAC Gala 2023 presented by Live Nation at The Beverly Hilton on Thursday night (September 21) in Beverly Hills, California.

The 35-year-old musician was honored at the event, organized by the Black Music Action Coalition, with the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award.

“Tonight I was fortunate to receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award,” he began his onstage speech. “This one really is different, because humanitarianism by nature is thankless and selfless. I have decided to share my platform to shed light on people who help other people. Thank you BMAC, this is truly an honor.”

Lizzo added that “it’s easy to do the right thing when everyone is looking at you, and it’s what you do in those moments when no one is looking that defines who you are.”

“I’m going to continue being who I am, no matter who’s watching. “I’m going to continue to shine a light on people who are helping people because they deserve it,” he continued. “I’m going to continue to amplify the voices of marginalized people because I have a microphone and I know how to use it.”

Lizzo concluded, “I’m going to continue to represent and create safe spaces for fat black women because that’s what I do.”

The BMAC Gala celebrated artists, executives, entrepreneurs and activists who used their platforms to achieve social change over the past year.

The honor comes just as Lizzo faces several lawsuits from her former dancers and a stylist.
