Mackenzie Scott Tuttle was born on Tuesday, April 7, 1970 (age 52 years; as in 2022) in San Francisco, California. He completed his schooling from The Hotchkiss School in Salisbury, Connecticut, United States. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Princeton University from 1988 to 1992. At Princeton University, McKenzie was under the tutelage of Nobel laureate Toni Morrison.

In 1994, McKenzie and Jeff left their jobs at DE Shaw to focus on their business ventures. According to her, she was driving from New York to Seattle, while Jeff was sitting in the passenger seat typing out Amazon’s business plans. Amazon initially started as an online bookstore out of his garage. McKenzie negotiated Amazon’s first freight contract while she was working at a local Starbucks café. He also served as the company’s bookkeeper and administrator. As the business grew, McKenzie took a step back from office work to focus on her family and her writing career.
