The beautiful scene in which Louise Olsen’s brush has created an entirely new work aptly named Hidden Lake. Pollination, Louise’s first exhibition of paintings, was inspired by a calm, eucalyptus sheltered body of water in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. This is a big change for someone who has been associated with Dinosaur Designs for the past 35 years.

But an even more compelling story is hidden behind the joint work. In a new phase of Louise’s life, she and her renowned artist father, John Olsen, paint peacefully together in his peaceful country retreat. All canvases were created at that time.

Their day now has a calm rhythm. Every morning after breakfast, they retire to the classroom at the back of John’s house to start the day’s work. Louise’s studio is large and airy with large doors opening to the lake outside. She often ventures out there with her easel, canvas and paint pots to bask in the ever-changing light and peaceful soundscape of nearby ducks and birds.

John often starts mumbling something about good morning work worthy of a glass of wine around midday. Louise temporarily moved in with John during his recent quarantine before returning to her husband Stephen Ormandy and their daughter Camille in Sydney. “Father is 92 years old now; he is remarkable for his age, but his body is aging and he uses a walker even though his spirit is sharp as a whip.
