KK Venugopal is the 15th Attorney General of India. On 30 June 2017, he was appointed as the Attorney General of India by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind. Before becoming the Attorney General of India, he was a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court of India and an Indian constitutional lawyer.

Kottayan Kathankot Venugopal was born on 6 September 1931 (Sunday) (age 89 years; as in 2020) in Kanhangadh, Kasaragod district of Kerala and grew up and did his schooling from Mangalore. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He completed B.Sc. Has received the title of. degree in Physics from Madras Christian College, Chennai. Additionally, he studied law from Raja Lakhamagouda Law College in Belgaum, Karnataka.

KK Venugopal comes from a family with an administrative background. His father MK Nambiar was a barrister in the Madras High Court during the British rule in India. MK Nambiar died on 18 December 1975. His mother’s name is Kalyani Nambiar. He had two brothers and a sister. His brothers’ names are Shiv Shankar Nambiar and Ramkumaran Nambiar. His sister is Nalini Vasudevan and she died on 4 January 2013.

Venugopal married Shantha Konath Venugopal on 28 May 1958 in a traditional manner. He has two sons and a daughter from his marriage. His elder son is Krishnan Venugopal (Senior Advocate, Supreme Court) and his younger son is Kannan Venugopal. His daughter’s name is Lakshmi Venugopal.
livelihood
After completing his formal education, Venugopal started his career as a lawyer in Mysore in the year 1954. Subsequently, he started his practice in the Madras High Court under his father and gained over 5 decades of experience with him. He moved to Delhi in 1972, where he was appointed as a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court of India. In his career, Venugopal has worked on many high-profile cases such as the Babri Masjid demolition case. In the case, BJP leaders Lal Krishna Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee were accused of instigating the protests, which led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid. As the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal has been in the headlines many times and in March 2019, he represented the Narendra Modi government in the Supreme Court regarding the Rafale deal and the controversy related to it.

- KK Venugopal faced heavy criticism when he asked senior lawyer Anand Grover to address senior lawyer Indira Jaising as his “wife” instead of “Ms.” Jaisingh had filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 2019. Later, Indira Jaising was hurt by this comment and asked Venugopal to withdraw his statement and said that he is an individual and has his own identity.

- For the period 1996–1997, he was appointed as President of the International Association of Lawyers (Union Internationale des Avocats).
- The Royal Government of Bhutan appointed KK Venugopal to tour the country and help draft the Constitution of Bhutan.
- In 2002, Venugopal was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honour.
- In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian honour, given by the Government of India.
- On 29 June 2020, KK Venugopal was re-elected as the Attorney General of India, and his term of service began on 1 July 2020 for another year.
