Anya Taylor-Joy was born on April 16, 1996 in Miami, Florida to a Scottish-Argentine father and a British-Spanish mother. Her mother was a psychologist and her father an international banker-turned-speedboat driver. Anya’s parents moved her family to Buenos Aires, Argentina, when Anya was a child.
The family loved living in Argentina, but the rapidly worsening political situation in Argentina forced the family to move to London six years later. Few in Anya’s household supported the move from Buenos Aires to London, but Anya said Marie Claire that everyone eventually saw meaning in the movement.
Anya quickly learned English and plunged into acting at school. Her path to acting stardom began after she was unexpectedly sought out as a model. During one of her modeling shoots, she met actor Allen Leech, who helped her break into the world of acting. She told him Marie Claire:

Anya’s career in the modeling industry began after she was spotted on the street by the famous talent scout Sarah Doukas. Sarah and Anya’s first meeting would fit perfectly into a kidnapping scene in an action movie. While Anya was walking her dog, she noticed a car following her. Thanks to Sarah Doukas, Anya met Allen Leech. Alan put her in touch with an acting agent, who immediately booked her for auditions. Her first audition was for the role of a young Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. She cried for days after not getting the part, but it wasn’t long before her despair turned to euphoria.
Anya’s next audition was for her role in The witch. The memory of her rejecting Maleficent came back quickly after Anya saw at another audition that she seemed perfect for the part. Anya told him W Magazine that she almost gave up, but the film’s director encouraged her to try:
And then I met up with Rob [Eggers, the director] and I was very excited and a little hysterical because the script had affected me so much. Anya became more comfortable with her appearance as she got older. “I’m a little less clumsy,” she said.
