Holly Madison opens up about one of Hugh Hefner’s alleged “control tactics.”
In a new interview, the 43-year-old former reality star, who dated the late Playboy founder for seven years, explained why Hugh hated it when his Playmates wore red lipstick.

“I think it was a control tactic, but also, when I was new, I wore red lipstick a couple of times, and he didn’t say anything about it, because when you were the new girl in the group, they always treated us well,” she shared Holly in the At the forefront with Coco Mocoe podcast.
“Someone said that the higher up you are in a cult, the worse they treat you because they want new people to want to bond and feel involved,” Holly continued.
Holly first moved into the Playboy Mansion in 2001, when she was 21 years old. She began dating Hugh that same year.
“So I wore red lipstick when I was new,” Holly recalled. “It wasn’t a big deal. It wasn’t a big deal until, like, six months later, when I was living in his room and I was the main girlfriend, then he felt like he had leeway to yell at me for it.”
Holly went on to say that Hugh didn’t like women wearing red lipstick because he thought it made them look older.
I think she didn’t love it, because when she invented the Playmate concept in the ’50s, she wanted the women to look very young and fresh-faced because she felt the ’50s look at the time was very — He described her as ‘the sister older than someone,’” Holly explained.
“She was much more sophisticated, model, red lipstick,” Holly continued. “There was a lot of fabric and big skirts and everything, and I hated that. She wanted a tiny, fresh and very young look.”
She added: “So I think that’s where her hatred for red lipstick came from. [because] For him, that was an older, mature woman, and it was no longer something barely legal.”
Holly and Hugh dated until 2008, when she moved out of the mansion. He then married Crystal Hefner, with whom he remained until 2017, when he died at the age of 91.
Earlier this year, Holly revealed why she didn’t want to speak to Hugh before his death.
