On August 2, 1993, 13-year-old Eric brutally tortured and killed Derrick Robie, a four-year-old boy from the same village. Derrick was initially tricked into following Eric into the woods, where he strangled and beat him to death with a baton. After his parents filed a missing person report for him, police found the boy’s battered body in the woods, surprising the entire small community of Steuben County, New York.

What happened after the heinous crime?

After that horrific episode, Eric Smith was accompanied by his mother and a family friend with the case investigator, where he confessed to his gruesome behavior. In August 1994, Smith was sentenced to nine years in prison. At the age of 21, he was transferred to a juvenile detention center and eventually transferred to a prison.
