After completing post-graduation, Girish Wagh joined Tata Motors in 1993 at the age of 23. Soon, he became a part of the development team of Tata Indica. After the completion of the project and good sales of the Tata Indica, Ravi Kant, who was the MD of Tata Motors, selected him to work on the design and production of a small commercial vehicle. After extensive brainstorming and hard work, the final product was the Tata Ace, which sold like hot cakes in the Indian commercial vehicle market. Once the project was over, Ratan Tata and Ravi Kant decided to give Girish Wagh a team of 500 people and asked him to build a car within Rs. 1 lakh which also meets all the regulatory requirements. The project took three years and the Tata Nano was the final product in 2008. Girish proved his worth in the company by consistently delivering good projects and soon, he was appointed as the head of the commercial vehicles business unit.

- When they were working on the Tata Nano, Girish and his team used the M-800 as a concept and worked on all the details of the car themselves because they were given the final budget for the car, i.e. building a For. Price tag of just over Rs. 1 Lac.
