India’s recurve archer, Dheeraj Bommadevara lost the bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup final in Hermosillo, Mexico. In the quarter-finals Dheeraj Bommadevara was competing against two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion in archery, Kim Woojin. Dheeraj Bommadevara was the only Indian to compete in the recurve events but lost in the quarterfinals. Bommadevara scored 28, while Kim made a good start to the game with a score of 29. Leading 4-2 in the final set, Bommadevara was in command. Kim made a series of 9, 9, and 8 strokes. Bommadevara maintained his composure and hit two tens and a nine. As compensation for defeating Kim, Bommadevara had to face first-seeded Lee Woo Seok in the semi-finals. Lee scored 28, while the Indian had started scoring 30. However, a more detailed look at the arrows revealed a tie result of 29โ€“29. In both the second and third sets, Lee scored 30, while Bommadevara could only score 27 and 28, resulting in the South Korean taking a comfortable 5โ€“1 lead. A poor start against Italian Mauro Nespoli during the third-place match saw the Indian lose the first set 30-29. In the subsequent set, both archers faced strong winds and scored a total of eight points, equal to 27. The Italian’s troubles were even worse during the third set as he arrowed and scored 7 and 8 points despite Bommadevara’s 29 points. The performance tied the match at 3-3 points. It looked like Nespoli would go down after hitting shots 9, 8 and 10 as Bommadevara needed 10 points to win in the final set but could only score 8 points.
