Dave Laut passed away at his home in Oxnard, California. It was Thursday August 27, 2009. The former Olympic athlete died after his wife shot him six times in the head and face. Dave’s wife, Jane, was arrested five years after his death. During the three-month trial, the judge was Deputy District Attorney Rameen Minoui. The senior officer said Jane deliberately shot Dave execution-style with a Ruger single-action revolver. Jane later hid the revolver inside a grandfather clock.

Jane shared that she had shot Dave in self-defense. However, on March 30, 2016, Jane was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Previously, Dave’s wife was receiving treatment for her depression through clinical psychologist Katherine Emerick. Her clinical psychologist testified that Jane was diagnosed with anxiety, avoidant personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and dependent personality disorder.
In a 2016 interview, Dave’s son shared that he believes Jane made the ultimate sacrifice to save his life from domestic violence. Additionally, Jane also testified that Jane raped, beat, and emotionally abused her throughout her marriage.
Sharing her story from the night of the incident, Jane said Dave initially had the gun that night. Dave had threatened to kill Jane, Michael and his two dogs. Her son also shared in the aforementioned interview that he never saw Dave hit Jane. However, many times Jane would tell her to go to the computer or put on headphones. Michael now (at the time of the interview) believes that his mother did it to prevent her from listening to his arguments.
