BS Yediyurappa was born on Saturday, 27 February 1943 (age 76 years; as in 2019) in Bukanakere village in Mandya district of Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He completed his primary education from a local school in Bukanakere and his intermediate education from PES College in Mandya, Karnataka. He studied Bachelor of Arts from Bangalore University.

After completing his college education, he started working as a First Division Clerk in the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Karnataka in 1965. He soon left his job and shifted to Shikaripura, where he worked as a clerk in a rice mill that belonged to Virbhadra Shastri. , Two years later he married Shastri’s daughter. Yediyurappa moved with his wife to Shivamogga, a city in Karnataka, where he opened a hardware shop.

BS Yediyurappa belongs to Lingayat community. His father, Siddalingappa, was a farmer and his mother, Puttathayamma, was a housewife. He has two brothers and two sisters. His mother died when he was 4 years old. Yediyurappa married Mithra Devi in 1967. Mithra Devi died in 2004 after falling into a tank while extracting water. He has 5 children; Two sons, BY Raghavendra and BY Vijayendra, and 3 daughters, SY Umadevi, BY Arunadevi, and BY Padmavati. Yediyurappa did not remarry after his wife’s death and is a widower.

BS Yediyurappa has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since his college days. In 1970, he was appointed as the secretary of the Shikaripura unit of the RSS. He was jailed for 45 days in Bellary and Shimoga during the Emergency. In 1977, he was appointed as the president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political organization of the RSS. After the name of Jan Sangh was changed to BJP in 1980, he was appointed the President of Shikaripura unit of BJP. In 1983, he was elected to the lower house of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for the first time. In 1985 he was appointed president of the Shimoga unit. In 1988, he was appointed President of Karnataka BJP.

In 1999, he lost the Karnataka Assembly elections, but, he was nominated by the BJP to the Upper House of the Karnataka Assembly. In 2006, the BJP formed an alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) and formed the government in Karnataka. It was decided that HD Kumaraswamy will be the Chief Minister for 20 months and then Yediyurappa will be the CM for the next 20 months. When Kumaraswamy completed 20 months, he refused to leave the post of CM. On 5 October 2007, Yediyurappa resigned and the BJP withdrew support to the Kumaraswamy government. On 7 November 2007, BJP and JDS agreed for Yediyurappa to become the CM and he took oath as CM on 12 November 2007. However, JDS had differences with BJP over ministries. As a result of which Yediyurappa had to resign from the post of CM on 19 November 2007.

Re-elections were held in Karnataka in 2008. Yediyurappa contested and won from Shikaripura constituency. Yediyurappa also led the BJP to its first victory in the south Indian state. On 30 May 2008, Yediyurappa took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. On 31 July 2011, Yediyurappa had to resign as Chief Minister of Karnataka; As the Karnataka Lokayukta submitted its report on illegal mining, it claimed that Yediyurappa made profits from several land deals and illegal iron ore exports. On 30 November 2012, he submitted his resignation as MLA and member of BJP and on 9 December 2012, he launched his own party, “Karnataka Janata Paksha”.

Yediyurappa won as MLA from Shikaripura constituency, but his party was not performing well in Karnataka. On November 2013, he announced that he would rejoin the BJP, and on 2 January 2014, he merged his party with the BJP. In 2016, Yediyurappa was appointed President of Karnataka BJP. BJP has announced that Yediyurappa will be the Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. BJP won 104 seats (8 short of majority). On 17 May 2018, he took oath as the Chief Minister and was given 15 days to prove his majority in the House. However, the Supreme Court of India intervened and ordered a trust vote within two days. Yediyurappa failed to prove his majority, and hence, had to resign on 19 May 2018. This made him the shortest-serving CM in the history of India; Because he was CM only for 2 days.

In July 2019, 16 MLAs of the JDS-Congress government had submitted their resignations. Due to this the government had to lose majority in the Karnataka Assembly. A floor test was ordered on 23 July 2019 and the government had to step down after HD Kumaraswamy failed to win the floor test. Yediyurappa was invited by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala to form the government and on 26 July 2019, Yediyurappa was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

- In 2004, there were several rumors that Yediyurappa was having an affair with Shobha Karandlaje; A Lok Sabha MP from Karnataka. Although both of them had denied the affair. There were also rumors that Yediyurappa and Shobha got married to each other in a secret ceremony.

- In 2009, the District Magistrate of Karnataka ordered an investigation into the death of Yediyurappa’s wife. His wife had drowned after falling into a water tank. Many people claimed that his wife’s death was a conspiracy as the circumstances were extremely suspicious. Reportedly, his wife’s height was 5′ 5″, and the water tank into which she fell contained only 4 feet of water.

- In 2011, BJP forced Yediyurappa to resign from the post of Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was accused of corruption by the Karnataka Lokayukta. Yediyurappa resigned and was sent to jail on 15 October 2011.
- In April 2016, he was criticized when Karnataka-based sugar businessman Murugesh Nirani gifted him a Mercedes SUV worth Rs 1 crore. Yediyurappa visited the drought affected areas of Karnataka in an SUV. The opposition criticized him for accepting gifts and traveling in luxury vehicles while the people of Karnataka suffered.
- In May 2017, Yediyurappa along with other leaders had gone to the house of a Dalit man for breakfast. The person had cooked pulao for the leaders. Reportedly, Yediyurappa did not eat the food prepared by the Dalit man, but, he ordered food from a nearby hotel. Many leaders criticized his move and said that BJP does not consider Dalits as its equals.

- In February 2019, several audiotapes of conversations between Yediyurappa and other Karnataka MLAs surfaced. The audiotape revealed that several MLAs were to be given a sum of Rs 50 crore to resign from their parties and join the BJP. JD(S) claimed it was an attempt by Yediyurappa to oust the HD Kumaraswamy government.
