Brian Kozera, Ironman triathlete and veteran police officer, has died aged 44. A 16-year-old veteran of the Norristown Police Department was killed in a horrific bicycle accident over the weekend. On August 14, he was driving in Caernarvon Township, Pennsylvania when he collided with a vehicle. According to TMZ, Brian ran past a stop sign and crashed into the passenger side of the truck. He is said to have been ejected from his bicycle and entangled in the rear tire of a car. He died of his injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital.
Brian Koreza overcame cancer.
Brian Kozera is a seasoned police officer, athlete, husband, father and cancer survivor preparing for the Iron Man World Championships in Lancaster County. The championships are organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, which organizes long-distance triathlon competitions around the world. In 2015, Kozera triumphed over Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymphatic system. He runs an Iron Man fundraising blog to raise funds for cutting-edge cancer research. Kozera described her battle with cancer in a blog post. He stated the following:
“My cancer adventure began in April 2014, when I was preparing for my local triathlon… My life was about to change forever when I went to the local hospital for a hernia. My surgeon discovered a suspicious lymph node, which was later confirmed to be Hodgkin lymphoma with a reduced lymphocyte count, a rare malignancy. It would be an overstatement to say we were surprised.”
His battle with cancer inspired him to become an Iron Man athlete when he won it in 2015. He highlighted how hard he worked after recovering to become an athlete. Kozera says:
“In April 2016, I flew to New Orleans and finished half of the tough Iron Man in windy conditions. I arrived in Austria on June 26, 2016, just 418 days after the transplant, to join the 140.6 mile Iron Man. I have thrived, not just survived.
And Brian Kozera is proud of his police career. In the same blog post, he brags about how he was able to return to being a full-time cop after overcoming cancer. The Norristown Police Department, where Brian worked, expressed grief over his untimely death on Twitter. They found:
“We learned today that one of ours, a 16-year veteran, Captain Brian Kozera, died from his injuries in a collision outside work. I have his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
