Skating prodigy Kalani David is believed to have died Saturday after having a seizure while surfing off the coast of Costa Rica. He is 24 years old. Inertia, a surfing news website, first reported on the death of a Hawaiian surfer. According to the website, the skateboarding champion has Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a heart condition. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome can cause tachycardia, which means his heart sometimes beats too fast. The disease affects between 0.1 and 0.3% of the world’s population and is not fatal for most people. John Hopkins states:
“The biggest danger is sudden death from a heart attack, possibly from a rapid heart rate.” However, this is very unusual, occurring in less than half of the cases.”

In 2016, Kalani David suffered a seizure related to Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
Kalani David suffered his first seizure due to illness while skating in California in August 2016. In an Instagram post about the event, Kalani said:
“I had a seizure, fell on my face and woke up in the ambulance with my heart stopped.” When I got to the hospital, I had three seizures. “I’m so grateful to be alive.”
Later that year, at Christmas, he had another seizure. The late Hawaiian star had a convulsion that lasted for more than six hours, leaving him in a coma for two days. The surfer was at home on Oahu when the incident happened. He later said in an interview with a surf magazine:
“They don’t know for sure, but they think it’s because I have Wolf Parkinson-White syndrome, which interrupts the electrical current flowing through my heart. It makes your heart muscle build more muscle, and that makes your heart beat too fast, so I had to have surgery to remove the muscle.”
In 2017, he had surgery to remove excess muscle from his heart that was causing the seizures.
Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is characterized by “an additional signaling channel between the upper and lower chambers of the heart that produces a rapid pulse.” This disease is a slightly abnormal heart disease that manifests itself at birth. WPW syndrome is not usually fatal, but it can lead to many other heart problems. Children and young adults can die from sudden cardiac arrest caused by this disease. Treatment of the disease includes a number of techniques such as medication, cardioversion, and treatment of arrhythmias.
Kalani David’s friends remember him after his death.
Friends mourn and appreciate Kalani David after news of his death spread on social media. Kelly, a surfer, posted an Instagram story that read:
“Kalani is one of the…best surfers/skateboarders on the planet, always pushing the limits whenever he’s on his feet… Condolences to the network. Kalani’s wide friends from coast to coast and around the world.”
Meanwhile, photographer Patrick Eichstaedt posted a picture of himself with Kalani David and explained how the two met when Kalani was just 6 years old. He expressed his condolences and support to the figure skater’s family. Kalani’s family is trying to get his remains out of Costa Rica so he can be properly buried in Florida, USA.
