The relationship of Bill O’Brien and his wife Colleen: 25 years of love and laughter
Bill O’Brien and Colleen’s long-lasting love story began in 1998 when they exchanged vows. After more than 25 years of shared experiences, their friendship became stronger. Their family has been wonderfully expanded by the presence of two children, Jack and Michael. Jack, the oldest brother, was born around 2007, so he is now in his thirties. On the other hand, Michael, the younger of the two, was born on May 5, 2005 and is currently in advanced years. The happy meeting that paved the way for their love story happened in the early nineties.
Bill, then an undergrad assistant coach on the Georgia Tech football team, met Colleen at a sports bar party in Atlanta. The atmosphere was jubilant after Georgia Tech’s stunning overtime win against North Carolina. Bill fondly recalls the occasion, characterizing it as love at first sight. Mutual friends, particularly tight ends coach Doug Marrone, helped arrange their meeting.
Colleen, who was there as a guest of Marrone’s then-girlfriend and college roommate Helen Donnelly, found herself in the middle of a football celebration. Bill’s family, observing the spark between the two, offered their stamp of approval. As Bill remembers,
“My parents and brother were also there. They met [Colleen] at the beginning. And they were the ones who warned: ‘You better not mess up.
Colleen reflects on her first impressions of Bill, recalling his sense of humor despite the distraction of the many football games playing in the background.
“There were so many football games that he was more busy watching the games than talking to me,” she said, giggling. “However, one thing I noticed about him was his sense of humor. “He’s very funny and very himself.”
Their journey from that meeting in a sports bar to a quarter century of shared pleasures and struggles exemplifies the lasting power of love and laughter in their lives.
Philanthropic work of Bill and wife Colleen O’Brien
In a major charitable gesture, Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien and his wife Colleen showed compassion and community spirit in March 2020. The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson reported that the O’Briens donated $100,000 to the Houston Food Bank. This type of gift was essential to help the food bank’s attempts to offer food to people in need during the difficult days of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Humanitarian activities went beyond the framework of the O’Brien family, and the McNair family and the owners of the Houston Texans made a big contribution. They demonstrated their commitment to emergency relief operations as well as long-term relief for affected areas by donating $500,000 to the Houston Food Bank and Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston Meals on Wheels. Namely, the sports community in Houston came together in the face of difficulties.
