During a home break-in last week, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Paul Pelosi, was brutally beaten with a hammer. At the time of the break-in, the woman formerly appeared to be in Washington with her bodyguard. Following the event, Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake was reprimanded for joking about the topic.
Lake commented during a campaign rally in Scottsdale on Monday about school safety:
“It’s not difficult to protect our children at school, as they describe. Nancy Pelosi, she had insurance while in Washington, but her residence doesn’t appear to have any insurance.”
She went on to say:
“If our MPs, politicians and athletes can be protected, then clearly the most important people in our lives – our children – should be protected.”
Although Lake managed to make the audience laugh at her debut, she was criticized online for the nature of her jokes. Paul Pelosi remained in critical condition on Monday after undergoing skull surgery at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, according to reports. Meanwhile, his attacker, David DePape, was arrested and charged with assault and attempted kidnapping. According to the FBI’s complaint against DePape, he attacked Paul Pelosi “with the aim of retaliating against” Nancy Pelosi “for performing official duties.”
Twitter responds to Kari Lake’s attack on Paul Pelosi’s joke.
On Friday, Paul Pelosi caused widespread concern across the United States when he was hammered by an attacker named David DePape. He was hospitalized for the incident, which resulted in “serious injuries to his right arm and hand” as well as a “fracture of his skull”. As Pelosi recovered from surgery and was still in intensive care, Republican Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake laughed at the incident during a campaign rally. Following her comments, several Twitter users called out the MP for her joke:
You should blame Nancy Pelosi.. Bowser for not calling the National Guard!!!!!!!!! They let the chaos happen… Sheriff Brian Sicknick’s mother blames ‘people like Kari Lake’ for his death https://t.co/D29Rj5jprX

Kari Lake right now: “Nancy Pelosi, she’s protected in DC — her house doesn’t seem to have much protection.” The crowd burst into laughter and the interviewer laughed so hard he covered his face with a sticky note. pic.twitter.com/JCBxbrpw9V

Despite the ensuing outrage, Kari Lake responded to her remarks during an appearance with Tucker Carlson. She stated:
“We are unable to discuss any of these concerns as we have been informed by the media that they are prohibited.” You can’t talk about vaccinations, elections, Paul Pelosi or Nancy Pelosi, and now you can’t talk about Nancy Pelosi.”
She continued:
“I think about all of that.”
Kari Lake’s address also aired on CNN’s The Morning. Co-host Don Lemon criticized her claims as “vile”, and reporter Audie Cornish singled out her audience:
“Honestly, the thing that scares me the most about Kari Lake is the laughter of the audience.” It is not a comment. It’s our collective responsibility.”
Chan also stated:
“The moderator, the guy sitting next to her, just burst out laughing because he thought it was funny and the audience laughed too.”
He also mentioned that other Republicans were making questionable comments about the Paul Pelosi attack, calling the situation “terrible”:
“There have been Republican voices raised. For example, Mitch McConnell and others. [Kevin] McCarthy, but it’s been pretty quiet for the most part, and there are individuals who say things, like Don Jr., tweet things, but don’t even post a single video of it. What they are doing is disgusting.”
Nancy Pelosi released a statement Monday night saying that Paul Pelosi is making “steady progress” but will have a “long recovery journey”.
