Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated summer blockbuster Oppenheimer is slated to hit the theaters on July 21, 2023. The film recently took the world by storm and seems to have reawakened the spirit of cinema among people around the world.
The historical biographical thriller focuses on the life and origins of J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the most famous scientists in history. The film will not only describe his personal relationships, but also his revolutionary creation of nuclear weapons, which irreversibly changed the course of human history. Featuring several historical figures, the film is likely to be an entertaining and educational experience for film buffs.
One of the figures that will come to life in the film is the Hungarian theoretical physicist Edward Teller. It would be impossible to tell Oppenheimer’s account without including Edward Teller, a key player in the development and eventual explosion of the atomic bomb. Teller’s relationship with the physicist is made all the more intriguing by the fact that the former was the only scientist to testify against him during his 1954 security crisis.
Considering that Oppenheimer receives only Hollywood A-listers, the famous American filmmaker and actor Benny Safdie will portray this very fascinating figure in the film. An actor who has appeared in films including Licorice Pizza and Are You There God? His portrayal of the characters in It’s Me, Margaret received much praise. Fans are already expecting a spectacular performance from Oppenheimer.
Who is Benny Safdie?
Benjamin Safdie is an American film director, author, actor and film editor who was born on February 24, 1986. He is best known for making films with his older brother Josh. Heaven Knows What (2014), Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019) are some of their works.
Amy and Alberto Safdie gave birth to Safdie. He is Jewish and grew up in New York. Benny Safdie talks about how he got the part in Oppenheimer.
In an interview with GQ magazine, Benny admitted that Christopher Nolan was looking for someone “fresh and unexpected” to portray the coveted role of Edward Teller. He saw Safdie in two films: Good Time and Licorice Pizza. Christopher Nolan claims:
“I called Paul [Thomas Anderson] and asked about Benny, and he gave him the strongest possible support and pointed out that he’s an amazing actor, but also just a wonderful guy.”
However, Benny also said that preparing for the role was difficult as he had to imitate Edward Teller’s mannerisms on a daily basis, as well as adapt to his strong Hungarian accent. While Nolan insisted on sending his own voicemail, Benny stated that he made excuses and delayed the duty for weeks. Finally, when he handed the tape to Nolan, the director expressed his gratitude, saying:
“When he sent it to me, I listened to it about a thousand times and thoroughly enjoyed it.”
During press tours for Christopher Nolan and his star, the director continued to praise Benny and it will be fascinating to watch the actor bring such an intriguing and special character to life.
