Crystal’s murder
On February 24, 2006, Crystal was traveling in her boyfriend’s car with Juan Patelán (Crystal’s boyfriend) and Justin (Crystal’s brother). Belinda was also travelling, but in a different car. When their cars passed a gang in two SUVs in the Riverside area of California, the gang began shooting at the car in which Crystal was sitting. Belinda, who was present at the scene, saw her daughter gunned down; Crystal was shot in the head, Juan was shot in his midsection, and Justin passed away unharmed. No one in Crystal’s car was known to the gang. It is believed that the incident occurred because the gang mistook Crystal’s car for that of their rival. Juan survived after surgery, but Crystal died two days later at Riverside Community Hospital. In Crystal’s final moments, her mother vows to avenge her death. In a documentary, he can be seen remembering,
The last thing I got to say to him was I promised him I’d get them. They’re going to pay.”
a mother’s fight
After the funeral rituals are completed, Belinda plans to create fake accounts on MySpace to investigate Crystal’s murder, after someone told her that gangs were on MySpace. He recruited Crystal’s cousin Jamie, who later impersonated Angel (a name he chose for one of the fake accounts). Belinda and Jamie soon begin tracking down the potential killers one by one. Talking about it in a documentary, Jamie said,
I was obsessed with it. I knew how to make it look like this girl on MySpace was real. It felt as if I belonged. My typing was acting up. Pretending to be that, I think that’s ultimately what made it difficult. Loving someone who is dead is not a good feeling inside.”
At the same time, Belinda also used to drive near the houses of suspicious people and take photographs of their vehicles. Belinda admits that she wanted to kill Crystal’s killers, even though she had insisted her family remain nonviolent. He said,
I told them, “Okay, everyone, no violence, but in my mind, I still knew I would kill them.”
It took him almost a decade to find Crystal’s killers. In 2006, she was able to connect with William Sotelo who was one of the suspects at the time. In 2006, William gave his voluntary interview to the police, but due to lack of evidence, William was not detained and he disappeared almost immediately.
In 2011, Julio Heredia, who fired the shot that took Crystal’s life, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Ten other defendants pleaded guilty to a range of charges, including attempted murder and gun charges. Belinda continued to track him (William Sotelo) through social media, until she received information in 2014 that William was in Central Mexico. In 2016, William Sotelo, the last person involved in Crystal’s murder, was arrested in central Mexico and charged with gang and firearms charges as well as voluntary manslaughter; He accepted all the charges. On January 23, 2020, William Sotelo received a 22-year prison sentence for his role in Crystal’s murder.
