Graeme Souness’ career
In April 1986, Souness replaced Jock Wallace as Rangers’ first player manager after he transferred $300,000 from Sampdoria. The adventure was started by Souness and club president David Holmes to regain the football hegemony that Rangers had previously lost.
Since Rangers last won the championship in 1978, Celtic and the rising “New Company” of Aberdeen and Dundee United have won every Scottish League championship. Lawrence Marlborough, the club’s previous owner, provided the initial capital for the initiative.
The so-called “Souness Revolution” started with a number of important signings from English clubs. Because it broke the age-old stereotype of Scotland’s top players playing in England, it was important.
Among his first signings were Ipswich Town captain Terry Butcher and assistant goalkeeper Chris Woods from Norwich City, both with England experience.
Under the guidance of Souness, Rangers were refueled with new energy and quickly took over the dominance of Scottish football. In his first season, 1986–87, they defeated Celtic 2–1 in the tournament to win the League Cup and Championship.
They secured the 1987/88 League Cup, beating Aberdeen on penalties after extra time, despite losing the league title to Celtic. Although Souness’ Liverpool team-mate Dalglish stepped down as club manager in February 1991, Liverpool had won three league titles and two FA Cups in the previous five seasons and were still competing for the title. both titles.
Longtime coach Ronnie Moran has been selected to take over on an interim basis following Dalglish’s surprise resignation, but is not interested in taking on the role permanently.
On 16 April, Souness left Rangers with four games left of the season after signing a five-year contract to become Liverpool manager. Souness once again caused a storm when in June 1995 he was appointed as the coach of Galatasaray Türkiye.
He nearly caused an uproar when he displayed a large Galatasaray flag in Fenerbahçe’s midfield on April 24, 1996, after Galatasaray won the Turkish Cup final against Fenerbahçe.
Souness then returned to England to lead Southampton, although he resigned after just one season due to disagreements with chairman Rupert Lowe.
After his time at Southampton, Souness returned to Italy to take up a coaching job in Turin. When he arrived, it became clear that the owner of the club would decide every issue of the game without consulting him.
Souness was chosen by Joo Vale e Azevedo, the new president of the club, in November 1997 with the aim of restoring Benfica to its former glory.
Blackburn Rovers were promoted back to the Premier League in Souness’ first season as the team’s manager after returning to the English league in March 2000. Souness left Blackburn to become manager of Newcastle United after Sir Bobby Robson (71) was fired several times. game during the 2004–05 campaign.
