After completing his formal education, he started his career as an Assistant Manager at ICICI Bank, Mumbai in 2000. In October 2001, he began working at Calyon as a business analyst. In 2003, he joined HSBC and retired as vice chairman from there in 2010. From July 2010 to June 2012, he held the position of Vice President – Global Treasury Sales, South at Bank of America in Bengaluru. In 2015, he moved to Delhi, where he became the head of the BJP IT cell. In this capacity, he oversees the party’s social media presence. His association with the BJP can be traced back to 2009 when he was working as a banker. That year, he co-founded the Friends of BJP Forum, which ran an SMS campaign to promote the party and bring it to power. Other founding members include Rajesh Jain, managing director of Mumbai-based IT firm Net Core Solutions, and financial advisor Piyush Goyal. He urged people to join the group by logging on to www.friendsofbjp.org. A public meeting held in Lucknow brought Malviya to prominence. Ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP appointed Malviya as co-in-charge to oversee party affairs in the state. He has co-authored the book The Citizenship Debate: CAA and NRC (2020) with Salman Khurshid.

A series of disinformation campaigns
Malviya is often accused of spreading misinformation and fake news through BJP’s social media handles. In January 2020, Amit Malviya shared a video on his Twitter account in which a group of men talked about the Shaheen Bagh protesters. It was told in the video that the women who were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh were getting money for it. A person in the video further claimed that the protest was “sponsored” by the Congress party. A collaborative investigation by fact-checking sites Alt News and Newslaundry found the allegations to be baseless.

Two days after the “Sponsored Shaheen Bagh Protest” video, a photo of an elderly Muslim man eating biryani in Shaheen Bagh was shared with a caption that read,
Proof of biryani being distributed in Shaheen Bagh!
The act of eating food at the protest site was considered “strange” by various media houses. Subsequently, Alt News began monitoring his social media presence and found that Malviya repeatedly used misinformation to defame individuals, communities, opposition parties, leaders and movements. In December 2019, Malviya claimed that ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans were raised during an anti-CAA rally at the Clock Tower in Lucknow. Alt News clarified that the protesters did not raise pro-Pakistan slogans but chanted ‘Kashif Saab Zindabad’. Reportedly, Kashif Ahmed was the chief of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which was leading the anti-CAA protest in Lucknow.

On 16 December 2019, he posted a video of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act claiming that they raised slogans against Hindus. His caption read,

Lawsuit against ‘The Wire’
In October 2022, Amit Malviya filed an FIR against The Wire for ‘maligning his reputation’. Founder Siddharth Varadajaran, editors Siddharth Bhatia, MK Venu and Jhanvi Sen were booked by Delhi Police under sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 469 (forgery intended to cause harm to reputation), 471 ( Using forged document), IPC sections 500 (defamation), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention). In September 2020, BJP’s Subramanian Swamy had accused Amit Malviya of running a campaign against him through fake tweets. Case registered against Rahul Gandhi for a tweet
On June 28, 2023, the Indian National Congress filed a complaint against Malviya, accusing him of ridiculing Rahul Gandhi through a tweet. Malviya wrote in the tweet,

Controversial comment on Sachin Pilot’s father
In August 2023, Amit Malviya made controversial remarks about Sachin Pilot’s father, claiming that he had carried out the Mizoram bombing on 5 March 1966 when he was serving as a pilot in the Indian Air Force. Amit made this claim through a post on X and wrote,
Rajesh Pilot and Suresh Kalmadi were flying the Indian Air Force aircraft that bombed Mizoram’s capital Aizawl on March 5, 1966. Later, both became MPs and ministers in the government on Congress tickets. It is clear that Indira Gandhi rewarded those who carried out air strikes on her own people in the North East with respect and a place in politics.
In response, Sachin later posted a certificate that his father had received from President VV Giri when he was commissioned as a pilot officer in the Indian Air Force on 10 February 1970.
