In August 1992, he moved to Moscow, Russia, to work as the founding business editor of the Moscow Times, Russia’s first English-language daily newspaper.
Similarly, in 1994, Liesman joined the Moscow bureau of The Wall Street Journal, and in August 1996, he was promoted to Moscow bureau chief.
In May 1998, he moved to the New York office and began covering the international oil and gas business. In June 2000, he was promoted to senior economics correspondent at the Wall Street Journal.
He focused on the productivity revolution, macroeconomics, and various difficulties with corporate earnings reporting during his tenure at the Wall Street Journal.
Before joining CNBC in April 2002, Liesman worked at the Wall Street Journal as a senior economics writer, covering national and world economies, corporate earnings and the Enron accounting disaster.
