Just over 24 hours after making headlines for his botched Best Picture Award presentation at the 2024 Oscars, Al Pacino releases a statement about the incident.
During his presentation, Pacino skipped announcing the names of all the nominees and limited himself to announcing the winner. “This is the time for the last award of the night and it is my honor to present it. “Ten wonderful films were nominated, but only one will take home the Best Picture award.”
“Only one will win the Best Film award,” he said on stage. “And I have to go to the envelope for that, and I will. Here it comes. my eyes see Oppenheimer.“
The other nominees were American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Remains, Flower Moon Killers, Teacher, Past Lives, Poor, and The area of interest.
In a statement to The New York Post, Al Pacino spoke about what happened. “There seems to be some controversy because last night I didn’t mention each film by name before announcing the Best Picture award.”
“I just want to make it clear that it was not my intention to leave them out, but rather a decision by the producers not to say them again, as they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony.”
Pacino also stated that he felt honored to be part of the evening. He was also happy to have been selected to “follow the path” that the Academy wanted for this award to be awarded. “I realize that being nominated is a huge milestone in one’s life and not being fully recognized is offensive and hurtful.”
“I say this as someone who relates deeply to filmmakers, actors and producers, so I deeply empathize with those who have been slighted by this oversight and that is why I felt it was necessary to make this statement.”
Oscar producer talks about Al Pacino’s presentation
Al Pacino’s statement comes just after Oscars producer Molly Nearney spoke with Variety about your presentation. McNearney said Pacino’s introduction was always supposed to be quick.
“It was a creative decision we made,” McNearney confirmed. “Because we were very worried that the show was going to be long.”
“When you get to the end of the show, you’ve seen all 10 Best Picture clip packages. People just want to know who wins and are pretty ready for the show to end. At least that’s what we anticipated.”
McNearney later said that they did not give Al Pacino a package of clips. They also didn’t give him any nominations for reading. “I apologize if our decision not to have to read all of those nominations put you in a difficult situation.”
