YouTube has apologized to content creator Lofi Girl after removing one of the channel’s most popular live music videos due to false copyright allegations. Over the weekend, the channel tweeted that their cult-favorite Livestream had been pulled due to fraudulent copyright infringement. Lofi Girl is still one of the biggest and probably most popular YouTube channels. Netizens like the channel’s live streams that promote underground hip-hop beatmakers.
On Sunday, the YouTuber’s two most popular live streams, “lofi hip hop radio — beats for relaxing/studying” and “lofi hip hop radio — beats for sleeping/relaxing too,” which have been on the channel since February 22, 2020, have been removed. The creator of the clip took to his official Twitter account to announce that it had been removed for copyright infringement.
“Let’s hope @YouTubeCreators @YouTube can fix this soon…”
After followers spotted the message, the hashtag ‘BringBackLofiGirl’ started trending. Fans were hoping to catch the attention of the video-sharing site. Some also slammed Malaysian record label FMC Music for allegedly filing a false copyright claim. Lofi Girl also told TechCrunch that the channel can’t get a copyright strike since all the music on the channel is released under their own label, Lofi Records, implying that they have the right to release it.
On Monday, YouTube apologized for the takedown and confirmed that the copyright strike was issued incorrectly. The platform said in a tweet:
“We confirmed that the removal requests were abusive and canceled the requester’s account; we’ve resolved the strikes and restored your videos; sometimes it can take 24-48 hours for things to go back to normal!” That’s what happened and thank you for your patience while we worked things out.”
After YouTube confirmed that the live streams would continue, the channel’s creator rushed to Twitter to express his gratitude to the channel’s subscribers. The tweet read:
“I would like to thank everyone who helped spread the news; your support has been overwhelming and I couldn’t ask for a more supportive community!”
Who is the person responsible for Lofi Girl?
Those who spend a lot of time on YouTube may have come across the Lofi Girl YouTube channel which features a repeating animation of an animated girl studying at her desk while her cat peers out the window behind her while music plays through her headphones. More than 10.7 million people have subscribed to the channel. The YouTuber became so successful that the Studio Ghibli-inspired figure was reproduced on Cartoon Network’s official YouTube channel with the Steven Universe character of acting icon Will Smith.
Juan Pablo Machado, a Colombian artist, designed a distinctive figure. The channel was previously known as ChilledCow. However, the name was changed because the old moniker “was no longer indicative of what the channel was about,” according to the founder. The ChilledCow YouTube account was managed by French artist Dimitri during his tenure there. That is, until August 2017, when Machado’s character was established. Although the person remains the same, their clothing changes frequently throughout the videos, as do their locations. However, she always wore her signature casual clothes.
