The 2023 WGA general strike has finally come to an end. The strike began on May 2 when negotiations between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to result in a new contract. The WGA has been on strike for a total of 148 days, fighting for issues such as fair pay, artificial intelligence regulation, better streaming residuals, and more transparency into streaming ratings. The two parties reached a preliminary agreement on September 27.
Every hollywood reporter, the tentative agreement has been voted to officially end the 2023 writers strike. 99% of WGA members voted in favor of the new agreement. The new contract takes effect retroactively on September 25 and is valid until May 1, 2026, at which time it will be renegotiated.
What the end of the WGA strike means
Once the WGA strike began, writers stopped working on strike-affected projects, which affected many titles in production or pre-production.Production on many upcoming movies and TV series has been paused or delayed, including Marvel’s bladedisney Creation: Ares, Andor Season 2, and Bob’s Burgers Season 15.Other shows closed their writers’ rooms before going into production, including Big mouth Season 8, Abbott Elementary School Season 3, and Grey’s Anatomy Season 20.
The end of the strike means some productions affected by the strike will reopen their writers’ rooms. Other productions, including late-night talk shows, have returned to the air as writers’ rooms reopened after the tentative deal was announced. However, most productions remain on strike as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) remains on strike after joining the WGA picket lines in July.
Although the 2023 WGA strike has ended, WGA East President Lisa Takeuchi Cullen announced that “WGA members will be walking alongside SAG-AFTRA on the picket lines.“SAG-AFTRA is currently on strike over many of the same core issues as the WGA, including fair pay, streaming transparency and artificial intelligence regulation, and their demands have yet to be met. But once an agreement is reached with the cast, well, unless anything Strikes in other industries may be imminent before production can resume.
